Gaps in the Gap Theory

Creation“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Gen 1:1-2

Many people believe that there should be a GAP between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. They believe that the GAP involved a very long period of time – many millions or perhaps even billions of years. Some of the people who believe in this GAP say that there was once a race of men living on earth during this GAP period (some kind of “prehistoric men“). We know that ADAM was not created until the sixth day of Creation (see Genesis 1:26-31). SO: This means that if there were men that lived on earth DURING this GAP, then they must have lived BEFORE Adam! Now even though many people seem to hold to this belief, the Bible doesn’t teach this at all. The Scripture shows us GAPS in the GAP Theory! Let’s see this…

GAP #1: Were there really men living before Adam? Not according to 1 Corinthians 15:45, “And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.”

Now someone can try to make this verse mean something that it doesn’t say…for example: “Yes, Adam is the first man…after the great catastrophe between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2“. But friend – THAT’S NOT WHAT 1 COR 15:45 SAYS! According to the Bible, Adam was the first man on earth!

Gap #2: Was there death before sin entered into the world? If a pre-adamic race existed, they surely weren’t around when God created Adam. This means then that this prehistoric man had to DIE somewhere in the GAP! But death before Adam is Biblically impossible if Bible-logic is to be followed.

Here’s what I mean: The Bible plainly tells us that “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). The judgment of death came upon the world as a result of sin – “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12). Death could not exist before Adam in the GAP, because it was Adam’s sin that brought forth death. If a race of man died before sin entered into the world, then death cannot be the wages of sin. Pre-Adamic man allegedly died BEFORE sin…but Biblically, death can only come because of sin.

Oh, but some will say, “Mankind in the GAP did sin, and they were judged, and they did perish”. NONSENSE! That’s a hypothetical statement and it definitely doesn’t line up with the Word of God!

Here’s a great idea: Stop trying to make God’s Word fit your own homespun philosophies! Don’t look for a GAP or anything else between two verses. When reading the Bible, God wants us to read the verses and not between the verses. We need to read the lines and not between the lines! We must read Genesis 1:1 and then read Genesis 1:2. There’s nothing between them. The person who reads between the verses can make the Bible say anything he wants. Read God’s Word and not the GAPS! Stop looking for secret messages that aren’t even there.
