Was Luther Even Saved?

Posted by Pastor Szekely on August 21, 2006

LutherWhy is it that there are Baptists who like to quote Martin Luther and even go so far as to think that he was a great man of the Faith? I believe it’s because these same ones don’t really know what Luther believed…stop listening to commentators and Protestant historians who say that Luther came to the conclusion that man is not justified by his own works but rather by faith alone, i.e. justification by faith alone in Christ alone…listen to what Luther himself says and how he defines his position on justification in Christ!

“To put it most simply, the power, effect, benefit, fruit, and purpose of Baptism is to save (my emphasis added). No one is baptized in order to become a prince, but as the words say, to ‘be saved’. To be saved, we know, is nothing else than to be delivered from sin, death, and the devil and to enter into the kingdom of Christ and live with him forever” — Martin Luther (Quoted from his Large Catechism)

*For more proof that Luther did not believe in salvation by grace alone, check out his small catechism:

Martin Luther – a persecutor of the Baptists – held to a sacramental gospel! As a Catholic, he wanted to reform his Church, not leave it. Luther believed that a person should have faith in the sacraments that [he thought] saved, and not that a person have the sacraments forced on them against their will…Sola Fida?

From his own writings, we find that Luther believed in baptismal regeneration, or that people [along with infants] will gain eternal life via baptism…If Luther truly held to justification by faith alone in Christ alone, he would have rejected this damnable doctrine…but he did not.

Now before you comment that I’m judging that Luther is lost, let me say this: If we are saved by Grace though Faith in Christ ALONE, plus or minus nothing – and we are how could Martin Luther even be saved and in Heaven today? I mean, if baptism does not save – and it doesn’t – and if Luther still trusted in baptism to save…friends, I wouldn’t want what he’s got!

Just think about it before you attack…let reason overtake emotion…and Baptists, was Luther truly a “great man of the faith”? I don’t think so.
