Our View of Thanksgiving

Posted by Pastor Szekely on November 15, 2007

Thanksgiving FeastAh…the warmth and excitement in the home, a crackling fire, the aroma of a succulent turkey, four different pies to choose from, football after the meal…This is what many in our country are looking forward to on Thanksgiving Day.

Thanksgiving is a national holiday that is unique to our United States. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the first “Day of Thanksgiving and Praise” in 1863, and in his proclamation he referred to “the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies” and many other bounties “which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.”

Mr. President…unfortunately I think that today, the blessings of fruitful fields, healthful skies, and other bounties which are of so extraordinary a nature do fail to penetrate and soften the habitually insensible heart to the tender care of our Creator and Almighty God. I believe many in our God-blessed country have lost the true view of Thanksgiving Day.

President Lincoln’s proclamation went on to say, “No human counsel hath devised nor President Abraham Lincolnhath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God…[and] they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people.”

A solemn, reverent, and grateful acknowledgment of the gracious gifts of the Most High God…as with one heart and one voice…wow. To hear again [and to mean it again] a similar proclamation from our country’s leaders, and to have a country again that would [just on one day] offer up  sacrifices of praise to God from whom all blessings flow…we just might get the true view of Thanksgiving Day again.

I’m not looking for our country to be a Theocracy…God didn’t call this country to be one, but it would be good if we – at least – acknowledged the One who has blessed us with many great spiritual and material bounties.

Christian, if our country won’t…may you will! We ought to be the first ones who have a great understanding of the providential Hand of God and on being humble and dependent upon His Unseen Hand.

“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.” Psalm 100:4

“Offer unto God thanksgiving” Psalm 50:14

What is your view of Thanksgiving? Nothing wrong with sharing a bountiful feast with family and friends, but is that as far as your view goes? Let me challenge you to stop on this Thanksgiving Day, acknowledge God, and be truly thankful for who He is and for what He is doing and for what He has provided. Have a great Thanksgiving!
