Gaps in the Gap Theory

Posted by Pastor Szekely on November 1, 2007

Creation“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Gen 1:1-2

Many people believe that there should be a GAP between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. They believe that the GAP involved a very long period of time – many millions or perhaps even billions of years. Some of the people who believe in this GAP say that there was once a race of men living on earth during this GAP period (some kind of “prehistoric men“). We know that ADAM was not created until the sixth day of Creation (see Genesis 1:26-31). SO: This means that if there were men that lived on earth DURING this GAP, then they must have lived BEFORE Adam! Now even though many people seem to hold to this belief, the Bible doesn’t teach this at all. The Scripture shows us GAPS in the GAP Theory! Let’s see this…

GAP #1: Were there really men living before Adam? Not according to 1 Corinthians 15:45, “And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.”

Now someone can try to make this verse mean something that it doesn’t say…for example: “Yes, Adam is the first man…after the great catastrophe between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2“. But friend – THAT’S NOT WHAT 1 COR 15:45 SAYS! According to the Bible, Adam was the first man on earth!

Gap #2: Was there death before sin entered into the world? If a pre-adamic race existed, they surely weren’t around when God created Adam. This means then that this prehistoric man had to DIE somewhere in the GAP! But death before Adam is Biblically impossible if Bible-logic is to be followed.

Here’s what I mean: The Bible plainly tells us that “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). The judgment of death came upon the world as a result of sin – “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12). Death could not exist before Adam in the GAP, because it was Adam’s sin that brought forth death. If a race of man died before sin entered into the world, then death cannot be the wages of sin. Pre-Adamic man allegedly died BEFORE sin…but Biblically, death can only come because of sin.

Oh, but some will say, “Mankind in the GAP did sin, and they were judged, and they did perish”. NONSENSE! That’s a hypothetical statement and it definitely doesn’t line up with the Word of God!

Here’s a great idea: Stop trying to make God’s Word fit your own homespun philosophies! Don’t look for a GAP or anything else between two verses. When reading the Bible, God wants us to read the verses and not between the verses. We need to read the lines and not between the lines! We must read Genesis 1:1 and then read Genesis 1:2. There’s nothing between them. The person who reads between the verses can make the Bible say anything he wants. Read God’s Word and not the GAPS! Stop looking for secret messages that aren’t even there.

You’re over-analyzing an old fable. There’s no evidence that Adam ever existed.

  2. LOL! I will call the Bible evidence…I would even call YOU evidence, for YOU are a descendent of Adam.

BTW: You’re unbelief and scoff does not disprove the Bible.

  3. I wanted to invite you and your readers over to a blog I started tonight. For about 2 1/2 years I sent out Daily Devotionals, which included many articles and studies by others. Some were links and some were full articles on other websites or message boards – but unfortunately over time, some of those websites went down or are no longer in existence. I no longer have programs to edit my pages on Earnestly Contending, so I stopped sending out articles by others. The ones on my Study Blog are by me, except for the ones written by Kate in the series on Numbers In The Bible we worked on together.

Here is the link to my Blog that will contain articles by sound men of the faith: Faithful Men Of God

I haven’t yet had a chance to work on the layout of the blog (ie. other links, and extras on the side margin), but you can access what articles I have put up so far.

  4. Thank you, Bro. Jerry! I’ve already linked your new blog on my blogroll…keep on writing and publishing ~ great job!

  5. Good stuff, brother! Too many people running after their traditions, rather than allowing the Word of God to speak for itself. These are some of the hardest people to debate – because they just won’t listen to the Bible, even though you can prove them wrong.

Another point worth considering is that even Satan/Lucifer and all the angels were made during those six days; therefore there was no one to rebel or start a rebellion prior to that time. Why would God wipe out a supposed pre-Adamic race for their sin, but then let Adam and Eve still go on living?

Angels were created to be ministers to mankind; therefore it makes no sense to create them eons before God made the world:

Hebrews 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

Satan even walked in the Garden of Eden BEFORE he fell – and that wasn’t created until the sixth day:

Ezekiel 28:13-17 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

Notice also that stars and water were in existence before he fell:

Isaiah 14:12-15 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

Satan and his angels could not have fallen before the end of the sixth day – therefore there could have been no gap caused by sin – because God said this after His work of creation:

Genesis 1:31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

This is the seventh time – ie. perfection – that God states His creation was good – when it was completed, it was very good.

One last point, according to the following verses and the order of events portrayed therein, angels would have been created on day one or two, before day three which was the laying of the foundations of the earth:

Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Nehemiah 9:6 Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.

Job 38:4-7 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

All the angels rejoiced on this day – therefore none had fallen or rebelled yet.

Psalms 104:2-5 Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain: Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind: Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire: Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.

Proverbs 8:26-29 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:

Thank you very much for your reply, Bro. Jerry ~ Lord bless!

  7. Howdy! Do you know if they make any plugins to help with Search Engine Optimization? I’m trying to get my blog to rank for some targeted keywords but I’m not seeing very good gains. If you know of any please share. Thanks!
