Holy Ghost Baptism

Posted by Pastor Szekely on October 2, 2007

Holy Ghost baptism, or “being baptized by the Spirit” / “the baptism of the Holy Spirit”, is the linchpin that holds the Universal Church belief together. Is there a Holy Ghost baptism today? When a person believes on Christ…is that person baptized by the Spirit? I say – and I’ll back this up with Scripture – NO! Yes, a person is indwelt by the Holy Spirit the moment of salvation, but the event of Holy Ghost baptism does not happen because it had already happened…let me explain.

First of all, here’s a “proof-text” used to support Spirit baptism: 1 Corinthians 12:13, “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit“. Also, the following quote is from J. Vernon McGee, Founder and Teacher of the Thru the Bible Radio Bible Study Program, “Now how does a person get into this body of believers? [1 Cor 12:13] This is the baptism of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who puts us into the body of believers…” McGee’s quote states that when a person is saved that person gets put into “the church” by Holy Ghost baptism.

[Just a quick not right here: “the church” IS NOT “the family of God” or “Kingdom of God”! Ekklesia {church} IS NOT Basileia {kingdom}…these are two different words with two different meanings! A church is a called-out assembly…having a locale and being visible. When a person is saved, he’s born into the Family of God, but that does not place him in a church…alright, let’s go on.]

From where do we get Holy Ghost baptism? In the Book of Joel [2:28-29] the Bible says, “I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh“. John the Baptist said in Matt 3:11, Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16, and John 1:33, “He [Jesus] shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost“. And even the Lord Jesus Himself said in Acts 1:5, “ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence“. Holy Ghost baptism would be an event…a future event from the perspective of these verses.

So…when did this “event”, this Holy Ghost baptism that was prophesied, take place? Acts 2:1-4, “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Vs16-17, “But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.

Upon whom was this baptism? Answer: This Holy Ghost baptism was upon Christ’s called-out, assembled membership…His Church! These people were already saved in Christ and [water] baptized members of the Church at Jerusalem. [And BTW: Please note that there was a church already on the Day of Pentecost…Christ started His Church, not the Holy Spirit!]

So after this promise and prophecy comes true, the Holy Ghost takes His position in the Church as Administrator of Christ’s commands – Acts 1:2, “Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen“.

Then, throughout the Book of Acts, the Holy Ghost is poured out, falls on, or given to “all flesh” [see Acts 2:17 & Joel 2:28], or all facets of civilization. Note the event upon the believers of “all flesh”:

The Jew – Acts 2 / The Samaritan – Acts 8:1,4-12, 14-17 / The Gentile – Acts 10:44-48; 19:1-6

IN EVERY CASE, church members were present during this event AND in every case the Holy Ghost was poured out, fell on, or given to SAVED INDIVIDUALS, with many already being baptized in water! [Yes…the recipients of Holy Ghost baptism were ALREADY SAVED – BELIEVERS – GOD’S CHILDREN!!!] Is this important? YES. Why?

If we see that Holy Ghost Baptism was given unto BELIEVERS, then 1 Corinthians 12:13 IS NOT Holy Ghost Baptism; SO THEN Dr. McGee’s comment is incorrect about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit; AND THEREFORE, there is NO SUCH THING as a Holy Ghost Baptism today! [And what about this: Can there be a “universal church” today without Spirit baptism?]

Ephesians 4:4-6, “There is one body [in an institutional sense, there is only one body of Christ…and it’s a church. Not universal, but always a local & visible called-out assembly!], and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism [not Spirit & water baptism…just one = water baptism], One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

  1. Good article Brother Szekely,

A good understanding of Acts 1:4-8 helped me understand WHY the Baptism of the Holy Ghost was so important. The church at Jerusalem could not fullfill Acts 1:8 untill this empowerment came “not many days hence” on the day of Pentecost. This is very important in how we as Christian obey the Great Commission in God’s way – thru the local church!

    Well said, Bro. D!

Just recently and again, I’ve come across people who profess to know Christ as their Saviour and who profess to love Him…but when we sit down and go through the New Testament plainly showing, and not twisting, Scripture that proves every believer needs to be a member of a true, N.T. church, these “lovers of Christ” balk at the Biblical fact!

“I’ll join no denomination!”…”No one can tell ME what to do”…”Well, why can’t I just have some other Christians over and have a Bible study, and blah, blah, blah!!!”

Here’s a novel idea: Let’s just do it the way the Lord Jesus Christ told us to – join and work through His institution – the Church!

How’d I get off on this, I’m not sure…but you’re right. Holy Ghost baptism WAS very important…without it – no empowerment – no enlightenment – and no Great Commission.

Thanks again for your comments, brother, and I’m truly praying for you and Victory Baptist Church.

    Lord bless!

  5. Wow, For with Stammering lips shall I speak to my people”, we are caled to teach/ preach the “FULL GOSPEL MESSEGE”. If this is to take place the Baptism of the Holy ghost and with fire must be preached….For the whole gospel is Death + Burial= Ressuctection+ Ascension(Exaltation)+ BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT+ Second Coming= THE FULL GOSPEL. For many years I was a Baptist Pastor who believed I was completely preaching all I needed to preach, but God!! hallelujah, allowed me me gain a greater Revealation of knowledge of His word. To be rebaptised in the name above all names, and filled with the Holy Ghost with the EVIDENCE OF SPEAKING IN AN UNKNOWN TONGUE. I then realized that as believers we live such seperated lives as so-called people of God, who have been called out of, and into….But until we agree that it is not a denominational issue at hand in these last days, but that we truly trust Jesus Christ to be who he says HE IS. “For there is no other nam given under heaven whereby we can/must be saved” (Acts 4:12), “All that you do in word or deed, do in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving glory to GoD” (Col 3: 17), we must walk in agreement with His word, to experience all He has for us To Preach the Gospel, is to preach Jesus in His fulness. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is to empower every believer to be a WITNESS. We are saved by Faith, but empowered by Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

  8. The next time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as a lot as this one. I imply, I know it was my choice to learn, however I really thought youd have something fascinating to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you might fix in case you werent too busy searching for attention.
