What’s the Difference?

A person who professes to know Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord ought to be different than the world and it’s philosophy. I have a saying that Christians ought to be different – and not just to be different, but to make a difference! When a person was born-again, the Holy Spirit made that person a new creature in Christ: “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Cor 5:17) [see also Eph 2:11-19 and Eph 4:20-32].
Is there a difference in you? Has there been a difference in you since you’ve professed to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour? In what ways do you see a difference or a change that would point to “a new creature”?
In my personal Bible reading time I’ve just come across these verses again from Luke 6:47-49: “Whosoever cometh to me [this is the Lord Jesus speaking], and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great”.
What were the similarities of the two men in these verses? They both built a house, they both went through a storm [see also Matt 7:24-27], and they both felt the effects of that storm. But now what was the difference between the two men? The first man laid his foundation on a rock while the second man built a house without a foundation upon the earth. What am I getting at? Both men built a house; both men experienced a storm and all it’s effects; but the foundation made all the difference!
A Christian goes through the storms and trials of life just like the world does [I believe even more so!]. Christians are tempted with evil and tried in many ways. If you profess to know Jesus as your Saviour, the world is watching you to see how you will respond to things around you. They’re watching you to see if you will laugh at the dirty jokes…if you will join them in gossip…if you will commune with them in complaining and being critical, etc. They’ll want to know how you’ll respond to world events and looming dangers, real or otherwise.
So what will your response be? Will there be a difference in you? Will the world see faith exercised because you’re resting on the Rock of your salvation? Or will they see someone that is just as hopeless and faithless?
What’s the difference…between you and the world? The difference needs to be found in what your foundation clings to.
